A small shepherd met an old man, who asked him to carry a letter to paradise and described to him the way there: “Listen, first take the narrow path you see over there—and he showed him the path on the right. The road is difficult, uneven, stony, and filled with brambles and nettles, and brambles and thorns; there are also vipers, toads, deaf creatures, and all sorts of venomous and hideous reptiles . . . . Keep walking with courage and you will soon come to a stone fence that bars the road; you will cross through this fence. But do not look back before you have crossed it, whatever you might hear, or else you are lost. Once you have passed this barrier, you will find yourself at the foot of a tall mountain, and you must climb to the top of this mountain, through the nettles, the brambles, and the thorns. . . . If you can reach the top of the mountain, you will see there a beautiful castle, whose walls all of gold and jewels will dazzle you. But you need only knock at the door of this splendid castle and Saint Peter will immediately open it, for this is heaven.”

The shepherd boy set off on this path; he tore his feet and legs amid the brambles and he was threatened by serpents. He crossed over the stone fence and cast a glance back. He saw the road was full of fire, demons, and horrible and menacing monsters. He reached the foot of the mountain and made the painful ascent, whereupon he saw a castle shining with light in the middle of a flower-filled prairie surrounded by a silver wall with one door. He knocked, Saint Peter opened it for him, the Good Lord showed him heaven and informed him that he had left home one hundred years ago.

When he returned to the old man, he gave him a letter from God and described what he had seen. With that, the old man carried him off to heaven for it was God himself.30
